Bentley meet and greet on the square

From the Dr. Robert Bentley for Governor campaign:

We are having a Meet and Greet for Dr. Bentley at 216 West Side Square, Huntsville Alabama 35801 (Historic Regions Bank Building) from 1:15 to 2:15 on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.  If you are interested in meeting Dr. Bentley and/or hearing him speak, please come to this event.  Your admission price is to bring a friend.

Also, for those involved in the real estate and/or construction industries, we will have another meet and greet at the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association, located at 2804 Bob Wallace Avenue, later that afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30.

We have a tight schedule for him that day, but we hope that you can be with us during one of these time periods to meet the next governor of our great state!  Please do not be concerned about dress.  Dr. Bentley, being a strong supporter of Alabama’s work force, wants to meet you regardless of whether your collar is white, blue or dirty, so please come out and join us on Wednesday afternoon!

We’ve been writing about Robert Bentley since he announced his candidacy for Governor.   BTW, Dr. Bentley supports local restaurants – he and his campaign ate Stanlieo’s subs that day (this is the type of hard-hitting ‘reporting’ you can expect from me).

Brian and I interviewed Dr. Bentley when we filled in for Dale Jackson on WVNN (we’re the true Kingmakers!):

Dr. Bentley described his plan to create scholarships for Primary Care Physicians who commit to working in underserved areas.  He also talked about Health Savings Accounts and we asked him if the State could implement some sort of ‘Individual Development Account’ for Health Care.  We asked Bentley about his Economic Development ideas – he prefers that the State encourage existing / local industries to grow, as opposed to giving (m/b)illions to foreign companies (id est Thyssen-Kruppe).

Northeast Alabama Tea Party Rally

WHAT:            HUNTSVILLE TEA PARTY ELECTION RALLY FOR NORTHEAST ALABAMA

WHEN:            October 26, 2010 at 5:30 p.m.

WHERE:          Parking lot at corner of Clinton Street and Woodson in (across from Clinton Street Post Office)

Mary Scott Hunter, Republican Candidate for State School Board (District 8)
Senator Paul Sanford, Republican Candidate for State Senate (District 7)
Councilman Bill Holtzclaw, Republican Candidate for State Senate (District 2)

Please mark your calendars to join us for what we hope to be a fantastic turnout to hear and/or meet some of the GOP candidates from our area the week before the election.  We will also asking that you publicize this event through your organizations or campaigns, as the case may be, once our formal release is prepared.  I wanted to go ahead and get this out so that all of you would reserve this date on your calendars.

Candidates running to represent all or parts of Madison and/or Limestone County that are in attendance will be recognized during the program by Roger Richardson.  Local elected GOP officials will be recognized as well.  We hope people will be there early to meet candidates, who will be invited to set up tables.

Please note that Dr. Bentley will speak first and, after speaking, he must IMMEDIATELY leave to go to Athens for a televised debate (so please do not try to talk to him after he speaks.  We don’t want him to be late!).  Mo will go next and then he must also leave to go to Athens, because his debate follows Dr. Bentley’s.

SHCA endorses Pendergraft

The South Huntsville Civic Association endorsed Barry Pendergraft for City Council District 3:

Following a thorough vetting process and a public forum with all candidates, the South Huntsville Civic Association Board of Directors has decided to endorse Barry Pendergraft in the Huntsville City Council District 3 race.

Pendergraft’s background and position on issues important to south Huntsville residents distinguishes him from the other seven candidates.  He served on the Huntsville Police Department from the age of 16 when he volunteered as a Police Ranger until he retired as a Lieutenant and commander of the south Huntsville precinct.  While serving in that role, Pendergraft worked with public housing projects in Huntsville and understands how they operate.  He is the best equipped to protect south Huntsville from the HHA’s overzealous expansion plans…  Since retiring, Pendergraft has continued his service as the Community Watch leader for the Chaffee neighborhood.

Pendergraft understands the mechanics of how Huntsville works and has developed and will continue to nurture a positive relationship with other council members and the mayor.  He has shown a desire to help constituents with not only the big issues, but also the small, day-to-day issues that are critical for an effective council member.  As an example, one of Pendergraft’s goals is to reform ineffective, unenforceable zoning ordinances relating to basic maintenance standards in order to preserve our property values…

SHCA strongly encourages members and supporters to vote for Barry Pendergraft for Huntsville City Council District 3 on August 24th.

Pendergraft is a smart choice.  His experience working in senior management for the City provides insight into City operations.  Pendergraft can hit the ground running at a time when South Huntsville needs effective representation.

Fun fact – let’s hope Pendergraft is as thrifty with City funds as he is with his campaign funds:  he paid about $1.50 each for yard signs, which is half the normal cost of $3 to $5.  As a penny-pincher myself, I appreciate the extra effort he made to get the best deal.

Respect the beer.
Respect the two ounce pour rule (ABC board policy).
Bring a chair if you’ll want to sit.

This is a great opportunity to meet elected officials and candidates in real life.  Mason’s provides a great venue – it’s big enough to move around in and talk to politicians one-on-one.  I see that Steve Raby is on the list – in keeping with our policy of not saying anything on the blog that we wouldn’t say to someone’s face – I’ll ask him about his involvement in hijacking an election if I see him, then let you all know what he says…
Thanks to the staff at Mason’s for wearing their Free the Hops t-shirts at the last get together - it was great PR for Free the Hops…

UAH ATO Battle of the Buffalo 2010

Thanks to the Huntsville Times for publishing an article promoting this event in Sunday’s paper.

Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at UAH is hosting their annual  Battle of the Buffalo chicken wing competition to benefit the Russell Hill Cancer Foundation.  The Battle of the Buffalo competition “heats up” on Friday, April 9, 2010 from 6 – 9PM at the UAH Intermodal Parking Facility.

The event is open to the public for $5 admission, live music, and “munching on as many wild wings as they can handle”.  Judges include Mayor Tommy Battle and State Senator Tom Butler (D-2).

Last year’s winner (in a close finish) was Domino’s:

Judges, including Maj. Gen. Jim Myles, University of Alabama in Huntsville’s President David Williams, Mayor Tommy Battle and Times reporter Jon Busdeker, had the tough job of tasting wings from each restaurant.

This year’s competition should be even better than last year’s event (from the exponent):

The event was wildly successful, with over 500 people in attendance. Everyone arrived hungry, and left satisfied. With sponsorships and entrance fees combined, ATO signed a check for $2,500 to donate to the local Russel Hill Cancer Foundation in memory of Paul Salmon, a brother who passed away in 2007 from leukemia.

UAH Congressional Forum

From the “Consortium of Students for Justice and Liberty”:

A Republican Congressional Forum will take place on Monday, April 12, 2010 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The hosting organization, The Consortium of Students for Justice and Liberty, is inviting the public to attend this free of charge event. North Alabama’s 5th Congressional District candidates, Mo Brooks, Parker Griffith, and Les Phillip have confirmed their participation in this event. The Consortium of Students for Justice and Liberty, an association of middle and high school students, will solicit questions for the forum from organizations around town and from several area schools. This is not an opportunity to protest, but instead a time to listen and hear what the candidates have to say.

The forum will be held in the University Center/Admissions Building on the UA Huntsville Campus. The doors will be opened to the public at 6:30pm with the program beginning at 6:45pm. The forum will begin at 7:00pm and end at 9:00pm. A straw poll will be taken and the results will be announced at the end of the forum. Members of the media are invited to attend and are welcome to collect questions from throughout the community and then submit them to the pool of questions for the candidates.

I’m not familiar with The Consortium of Students for Justice and Liberty, can someone tell us about the group?
