No one likes Parker Griffith: Hundreds come out for protest

2010 March 8

The verdict is officially in.  Conservative or liberal, no one likes Congressman Parker Griffith.  I went to the protest outside of the Griffith fundraiser headlined by Rep. John Boehner and I can safely say I’ve never seen such a diverse group of people in agreement on anything.  There was an estimated 250 to 400 concerned citizens gathered to express our shared displeasure with Griffith.

Links to other coverage (will be updated):

All three news stations and the Huntsville Times were there.  Lots of familiar faces from both sides of the isle were there.  If Will Anderson was there I didn’t see him and I’m deeply sorry if he is offended.

Moral of the story: local folks don’t care for Griffith and the national party would be well wise to keep out.

Update: Check out this excerpt from the Times article:

Griffith said he “appreciated” that so many people were using their constitutional right to express themselves.

“They’re disappointed, I know,” Griffith said after a brief news conference with himself and Boehner. “But the people don’t always have access to the same information I have. I think if they’d known that (President Barack Obama) was getting ready to cut missile defense and perhaps cancel the Constellation program, which would kill thousands of jobs here, they might have felt differently.

“I appreciate their protest, but I have to look at a much bigger picture than that. If they will allow me some time, I can demonstrate what I can do.”

We’ve given you plenty of time, Griffith.  You have to admire his chutzpah, effectively calling the protesters stupid by claiming we didn’t know what Obama was planning on doing.  The way I see it he’s the one who either went to Washington clueless or under false pretenses.  Obama admitted during the campaign he wanted to cut missile defense, yet Griffith ran on the same ticket with him.  What the Democrats are doing is not a surprise.

Here’s a sampling of the pictures I took:

Good to see everyone! Where Parker the Putz is concerned, we’re all in agreement.

Hey, maybe there’s other stuff to agree on as well. I don’t doubt it.

Liked seeing all the signs and meeting other “political” types from the community. People who are political junkies usually have more in common than not….

Countrycat, I actually enjoyed several conversations with the lefties I met. One of the union guys was telling me about meeting Parker Griffith at a small gathering of actual Communists not long ago.

We’re going to disagree about the role of government until the day we die, but agreeing that Griffith is unprincipled and untrustworthy is easy, and a great place for many in that crowd to see past the boogie-man image they may have had of people on the respective opposite sides of the line. We’re all trying to put food on our plates and roofs over our heads, and Griffith is not the solution either side is looking for.

I think today’s protest was significant well beyond the topic of the day.

Brian, I’ll save a Les Phillip sign back for you for June 2 :)

A small gathering of actual Communists? Holy Cow… why haven’t I heard about this cell right here in our area? To hear Parker tell it, that’s the natural constituency of LIA. I’m surprised they haven’t asked us to cover their meetings…

Yep…. last night was really fun. I enjoy exchanging campaign war stories with other campaign veterans. It’s amazing how similar the tales are.

400 people, really? Granted I wasn’t there, but I see about 70 in the wide shot picture above. Can someone confirm.

The 250 number was from a physical count. I’ve seen other estimates of 300 and 400. Let’s just say at least 250. They were too spread out along the sidewalk for a good picture.

At one point, the line of protesters stretched from the Bob Wallace intersection past the entrance to the Marriott parking lot. The 250 count was – as some of the other media folks told me – taken by the Decatur Daily reporter about 5:15. Lots of people came in after that because they came after work.

I have never seen a politician so hated by both sides of the aisle. I cannot believe this man can lay his head down on his pillow and sleep after what he has done. I truly feel sorry the people who voted for him.

It was good to see some old friends and acquaintances again and meet some new ones. One of the first things I saw was a UAW guy asking Chad Capps of the Huntsville Tea Party for a free T-shirt. Everyone, left-center-right seemed to be getting along famously.

Except for a comments on lefty blogs, Sean Hannity’s blog, and Redstate, I haven’t seen any negative posts about it.
