Think global. Drink local.

Good People Brewing Company of Birmingham is gearing up to hit the Huntsville market, with the help of our friends at Birmingham Beverage Company (distributor for Olde Towne, Sweetwater, and Orval among many other great beers).

The Nook had a keg of Good People Coffee Oatmeal Stout recently, and the Good People printed up a flyer describing how that beer affected the local economy.  Here is a summary of the flyer:

Ever thought of the many persons / organizations affected by the simple act of ordering a GPBC Coffee Oatmeal Stout and the exponential power of supporting your local economy?  While you are enjoying your pint, you are supporting the following organizations:

Good People Brewing Company and…
.  their accounting, legal, advertising, etc. services
.  local transportation companies
.  utility companies providing energy / water used at brewery
.  local / county / State taxes

Primavera Coffee Roasters located in Cahaba Heights.

J3 Organics uses spent grains (brewing by-product) donated by Good People as composting medium.

Continental Bakery uses donated spent grains in some of their products.

Birmingham Beverage distributes the beer: employing people, paying taxes, etc.

Free the Hops gets support from Good People to raise awareness of craft beer and lobby for better Alabama beer laws.

Pubs and restaurants sell the beer:  employing people, paying taxes, etc.

… the power of supporting your local economy is pretty incredible, not to mention you get a pretty good beer out of the deal.

BTW the Nook has a keg of Good People’s Snake Handler American Double India Pale Ale set aside for a special occasion – I’m looking forward to getting snake bit.

The Nook Christmas Party is Monday, 14 December 2009, starting at 5PM.  The featured beer is Left Hand Brewing Company’s Fade to Black Export Stout (from Colorado).  One of the great things about The Nook is that it’s got a nice crowd, for example I got to say hi to State Representative Laura Hall (D – 19) last time I was there.  She was enjoying a tasty Belgian Lambic, if you must know…

I was at an event in Birmingham a few months ago and had the opportunity to try the Rye IPA from Good People Brewing Company. I haven’t had beer that delectable since I lived in Germany. I wish I could acquire it locally in Alexander City. Unfortunately, even with the Free the Hops bill passed I have yet to see any local retailer offer premium beer in this area.

Great to see good beer come on the market. hope i can afford it. most of the time i drink Yuengling (SP?) which aint bad but that’s all i can say for it. I did get to drink two beers before most of the rest of america got to sample them — coors and anchor steam beer. i was at a meeting in denver in the late ’60’s or early 70’s, and had to work on a sudden speech assignment through evening meal time. when i finished it it was kind of late, nobody left to eat with. i wandered into a grill room in a big hotel. copper pipes running to the bar, waiters and bartenders in white aprons. i asked about the pipes. they carried beer from barrels to the draft spigots. i tried one. really good beer. it was coors before it got pasteurized and shipped all over. had a few with a grilled trout. one of the best meals i’ve ever had.

in ‘77 one of my kids was in grad school and her husband was in law school at Stanford. i took the rest of the family out there to Palo Alto for Christmas and i spotted a beer called anchor steam in a reastaurant where i took us all to eat. Tried it. really good beer but back then you could only get it within a few hundred miles of san franciso because it wasnt pasteurized. i’m going to save my pennies and buy some of the boutique beer mentioned. hope it or they come close to anchor steam and coors in the old days.

The Nook usually has a good musician/s playing live music on Friday and/or Saturday nights.

Loretta – it’s a special occasion when Huntsville gets Good People beer. The brewery is moving and expanding capacity, so maybe we’ll see it regularly. We’ve got a handful of retailers who offer premium beer.

Ivan – The Nook has Anchor Brewing products – Birmingham Beverage distributes Anchor in Alabama.

Disclosure: I like Birmingham Beverage. They distribute great beers, they employ my friends, and they support Free the Hops. Ditto for The Nook.

    Reactionary,

Do you mind if I cross post at Left in Alabama? I’ll give a link back to Flashpoint.

I’m not a beer drinker, but I know many of our readers are (including my sweet hubby). AND most are interested in supporting state and local businesses. For anyone interested in local beer and local businesses, this is great news.

countrycat – go ahead, and thank you for spreading the word.

Currently Good People only sells kegs, but they are looking at bottling after they move into their ‘new’ facility. Actually they’re looking at canning their beer like Oskar Blues (Colorado brewery started by Alabamians). Recycling cans is more eco-friendly (and more profitable) than recycling glass bottles, plus you can take cans to the beach or camping.
