Parker Griffith calls for end to estate tax
2009 November 24
Congressman Parker Griffith took to the floor of Congress to call for an end to the estate tax, which “has plagued family farms and small businesses throughout our country for almost a hundred years.”
It is nice to hear that the good doctor is in favor of eliminating the death tax. However, talk is cheap. A search of the Library of Congress website shows that as of tonight Griffith is not listed as a sponsor or cosponsor on any of the bills pending in the House that seek to repeal the estate tax.
For example, Griffith is not one of the 84 cosponsors on Rep. Mac Thornberry’s (R-TX) bill (H.R. 205). The text of that bill is quite rudimentary and seems wholly in line with Griffith’s stated objective:
- (a) In General- Subtitle B of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (relating to estate, gift, and generation-skipping taxes) is hereby repealed.
- (b) Effective Date- The repeal made by subsection (a) shall apply to estates of decedents dying, gifts made, and generation-skipping transfers made after the date of the enactment of this Act.

Griffith is resurrecting the old Reagan programs and even the old Reagan talking points. He’s a guy from the past running in a district whose conservative majority are living in the past. He’ll pass from the scene and nobody will shed a tear. Leave the dead to bury their dead.
