Who is getting nastier?
Here’s some telling insight into how the liberal mind works. Over at the Daily Kos (occasional reading is an occupational hazard for any blogger) there is a “diary” titled “Sessions Getting Nastier over Sotomayor Nomination.” The crux of the post is that Sessions is getting “particularly nasty” because he has requested documents from the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, where Sotomayor was once a board member. So, that is the definition of “nasty” at Daily Kos.
Let’s take a look see at some of the comments attached to that “diary” and I’ll let you figure out who is “nasty.” The edits for profane language are mostly mine. The children at Daily Kos have few inhibitions when it comes to salty language online.
- He IS from Alabama, right? He IS white, male, bigoted as f@#! and a neocon Republican, right? He IS for white affirmative action, right?
- Tells fine white folk of Bama: “I ain’t wearin’ nutin’ but 100% cotton here on out!”
- People like Jeff Sessions are only Americans because they lost in their attempt not to be 150 years ago. So he “governs” like a terrorist.
- The collection of Foghorn Leghorn impersonators that is the GOP finds being nonwhite to be an extreme position. Ergo being a member of a group which advocates for anyone other than whites is extreme.
- Reasons these fascist f@#!$ do this. 1. WE Let them. 2. They’re fascist f@#!$.
- “Crackers” own the media and America business.
- But when is Sessions going to be outed for the closeted c–ksucker he is?
- He’s a cracker which is volatile combination of ignorance and excitability.
- Bring it on, Jeffrey, you low-life turd… because the more you complain, whine and obstruct Sotomayor’s confirmation, the more you and your piece-of-s%#@, do-nothing, stand-for-nothiing party will be disliked by the American people and the more you will have to pay for it down the road. Bring it on, Sessions, you low-life, scum-sucking slop bucket.

“People like Jeff Sessions are only Americans because they lost in their attempt not to be 150 years ago.”
I will be stealing that line.
The rest of it sounds like it was written at LeftinAlabama.com.
Re: the third bullet point
Talk about a non sequitur.
This is the pot calling the kettle black.
I’m going to have to disagree. The level of discourse here in no way approaches the contemptuous, vulgar display that is Daily Kos. Is it always Sunday School appropriate? No. But the content on Daily Kos is thoroughly indecent.
Everyone knows that the blogosphere can be hyper-partisan and often crude in places. For someone to offer comments at Kos as a referendum on all of liberalism seems ridiculous ot me. There are callous individuals of all political stripes.
Fair point. I found this rather typical Daily Kos comment thread particularly amusing because the thrust of the diary is that Sessions was being “nasty” by requesting documents. You have to admit that calling that nasty when compared to the comments is asinine.
I agree that people usually stay well-mannered here. But, how about those comments sections of online newspapers here in AL? Things there get downright middle school-ish most of the time.
Between the Kos and Free Republic, I wonder how far off Idiocracy was in predicting our future.
We seem to be entering the age of the Perpetual Adolescent
You know… its funny. I caught that movie a little after the beginning and was astounded at how stupid of a movie it was. Sad thing is, I was so desperate to find out what idiotic movie it was , I watched it to the end.
You are correct though, we’ll be spraying our lawns with gatorade before you know it.
Tal East,
I am quite sure that there are some places on the internet (Free Republic being one) where right-wing types can get pretty over-the-top. But in my experience, I have yet to find a place where conservatives or even libertarians are as consistently vile as what gets posted at places like MoveOn, FireDogLake, DU, and Kos every single freakin’ day.
Face it: The left has a very serious problem with both hatred and mind-blowing levels of vulgarity and vitriol unmatched anywhere else in the political universe.
The left also has many many many more people in the mainstream blogosphere. As the tight continues to grow into blogging more and more, they will be just as bad. Just let the wingnuts be wingnuts and move on.
Tal East,
Even if we accept your assertion of “many many many” more lefties on the internet (and I would argue that since the most committed partisans are the early adopters, the most strident righties are already on the internet at this point, so your point is moot), that does not get you around the fact that places like DU and Kos have been cesspools from the get-go, even back in the day when “many many many” fewer people were on message boards and blogs. No, sorry: Vulgarity and hatred are baked into those websites’ DNA. It’s why they were founded, and it’s the sort of people they attract. It’s not a bug — It’s a feature.
I think it’s always a bad idea to pretend that a comment thread is a good representation of what a particular ideological group is thinking. This blog has a fairly high level of discussion, which is why I’m posting, but if you head over to FreeRepublic, you will read some straight up frightening stuff with alarming regularity. Alarmist let’s violently overthrow the government type stuff with a heaping dose of racism. I do think you tend to see more genuinely violent rhetoric on sites like FreeRepublic than you do on DailyKos, but I would also concede the worst rhetoric on Kos can be a lot more vulgar than what you usually see from the Freepers. Basically, I think you’re usually a pretty reasonable, intelligent conservative Brian and it’s pretty far below you to stoop to this. You can take on liberal arguments without trying to delegitimize them because of comments posted on a blog.
