Stone Manor conversion is underway
According to the Huntsville Times many Stone Manor residents have moved out and the public housing dependents have started to roll in.
Congratulations to the new tenants who have become the only public housing residents in the state of Alabama with a pool all their own. Bless their hearts. I’m sure it will be a great motivator for making the residents strive for self sufficiency. The HHA is even kind enough to staff it full time with not one, but two lifeguards at a weekly cost of $1,300. Fortunately the HHA is saying, although their word isn’t exactly worth all that much, that the pool will only be open to Stone Manor residents and their guests. I had originally heard the pool would be open to all HHA residents, but the “and their guests” clause does open a bit of a window where anyone and everyone could easily claim to be a guest of a resident.
I’m curious to see how the pool thing plays out. Lifeguards are cheap right now. It’s summer and kids are out of school and home for college and a $10 per hour job lounging by the pool doesn’t sound too bad. Will the pool close when school starts back up and $10 per hour lifeguards are scarce? Let’s say the HHA maintains the lifeguards for now (I still can’t get over the fact that public housing residents – freeloaders – are getting a free pool) what happens when lean budget times arrive? I’m sure $1,300 per week for lifeguards will be an attractive expense to cut.
The HHA took care of some tenants they kicked out. Many got checks averaging around $10,000 to cover expenses. Not bad at all. But amazingly those who qualified for public housing, but chose not to suffer the indignity of being on the public housing rolls, got nothing. The absurdity of that blows my mind. The HHA would be more than willing to subsidize their housing costs indefinitely while claiming to put them on a path to self sufficiency, but was unwilling to make a one time payment to help keep them self sufficient!
This is our government in action. Giving a swimming pool to freeloaders while stiffing individuals who exhibit gritty independence and self reliance.
I woudnt worry to much about the pool.It will be trashed in six month’s.
This really sickens me! I work and work but can’t afford a pool. I bet those people think they hit the jackpot. One might get hurt around that pool and probably sue HHA and the city. Now they can really hit the jackpot. I feel sorry for that pool. I predict the pool will be filled with dirt by 2011.
Don’t forget to factor in the cost of pool maintenance, water bills.
Also, what happens when someone gets hurt by falling into the empty pool during the cold season. Will they be able to sue the city? Maybe they’ll end up filling the pool with concrete to avoid that possibility.
This is the inequality that happens when trying to look good in the eyes of others gets in the way with actually doing what’s right. It’s hard to adapt efficiently when you have a one size fits all government/law.
Bham News had a front page story Sunday on their new fad: Tear them down and then rebuild mixed-use condos.
Not to worry. It won’t take long before some hopped up crack head Manor resident enters the pool long after closing time and proceeds to do the dead man float until his bloated body is retrieved by the coroner’s office. The pool will then be permanently closed. I give it no longer than Labor Day.
Oops, just saw Wayne’s post. Ok, so what sane individual is going to knowingly purchase a condo in a development that was designed to appeal to the freeloaders of society? Hmmm, I wonder what happens to property values in such a development? One word – boondoggle.
Oh, it’s much worse than a boondoggle. Boondoggles are wastes of time, but rarely very destructive. This is more akin to the “urban revitalization” of the 60s and 70s — A waste of massive amounts of money AND hideously destructive to society and our economic system.
This whole situation is comprised of so many absurdities stacked on top of one another, it’s difficult to even identify the most nefarious aspect of it.
Oh, for the love of God! Free loader? I am stricken with a condition that does not allow me to work, it happened after I had children. My husband works his tail off to pay our rent (public housing is NOT free), and utilities and feed five dependants. You people need to open your eys and look around you. Many people living in your own neighborhoods are on foodstamps and medicaid. Are they ‘freeloaders’ too?
I have a black mother and a white father and this sickens me how close minded white folks can be! I have lived in huntsville for 5 years. I love the city but hate the white people it truly disgusts me that I am half white. Dog gone right they act like south huntsville belongs to them. I say the entire city should be mixed. People ought to be able to live where they want to. Just because you are getting help does’nt mean you are a freeloader. Are you mad that you can’t get help….. no you probaly need help just to ashamed to go ask for it. what is the difference between this and the poor white trash that has taken over killen mountain and lacey springs…. the freeloaders have all of their teeth. I am so ready to move I pray that my husband gets this new job so we can get the hell on. These people that comment on this situation do not even have a clue as to what is really going on. It does’nt affect them in no way but still like an a hole every one has an opinion.SHUT UP ALREADY
“SHUT UP ALREADY” says momof3, spoken like a true leftist… Who do you think pays for your housing and why shouldn’t they be able to comment about where their money is spent?
“People ought to be able to live where they want to”. If they can afford it. If you are a ward of the State, then you get what and where the State says you get. You are not ‘entitled’ to live at the Ledges, for example…
I suggest counseling for your hatred of white people and your disgust at being “half-white” – it is not healthy. If you live in public housing you are probably eligible for free / reduced price mental health care.
