Will Laura Hall face Paul Sanford? Will local media ask Hall ANYTHING?
Laura Hall has been running some type of stealth campaign in SD-7. I’ve never seen a candidate so averse to engaging the media and making her views known. There have been no interviews, no debates. Does she even exist?!
Shame on the media for letting her dictate the terms of their coverage. Just because she has no desire to answer questions or face voters doesn’t mean the media should just ignore this race. The abysmal coverage of this race reminds me of why I started blogging. If you just watched the TV news or read the newspaper you wouldn’t know anything about this race. Maybe you’ll see an ad or two, but there is nothing of substance. Nada. If you want to know what is happening in local politics you have to find out for yourself. The media is of minimal value.
That can change, of course, and you can help make it happen. Reach out to the local media and give them a chance to atone for their lack of coverage in this race. Ask that they hold a debate between Laura Hall and Paul Sanford on Saturday, June 6th (the weekend before the election on June 9th).
Politely call each of the following outlets and request that they host or encourage a debate between Paul Sanford and Laura Hall:
- WHNT CBS 19: (256) 533-1919
- WAFF NBC 48: (256) 533-6397
- WAAY ABC 31: (256) 534-0482
- WZDX FOX 54: (256) 533-5454
- Huntsville Times: (256) 532-4000
These are local stations – they should provide local coverage of important subject matter. They should be covering this race! Call even if you don’t live in the district. This is bigger than just this race; this is about forcing better coverage of all local politics.
Today’s Huntsville Times sure didn’t ask any tough questions! What a glowing piece about her and evil, vile Sanford! They played her as the victim and will probably continue to do so.

Ripped from today’s headlines h/t Law and Order (4.00 / 2)
Todays’ above the fold Huntsville Behind the Times headline blared :GOP Ads add heat to race referring to the gop attack ads against Laura Hall. Funny how they didn’t say a mumbling word about Laura Halls ads,on the front page, or the Blues and Ballots rally. I haven’t had a chance to read the article, but did they at least get a response/statement from Laura Hall this time? Oh well, this is the liberal media we have instead of the liberal media we wish we had. *sigh*.
Who would have guessed that Redeye would leave such a comment!
“I haven’t had a chance to read the article, but did they at least get a response/statement from Laura Hall this time? ”
Translation: No one read the article to me yet.
See, this is why I cringe when right-of-center types praise Challen Stephens. While he can be a good reporter who does quality work from time to time, you can always count on him to pump out a craptacularly biased turd of an article like this one at least half the time. And generally, the bigger the article, the worse it will be.
Here’s a link to the HSV Times article that appeared almost on cue.
People complain about attack ads (although the AL GOP ads on behalf of Sanford are factually accurate), but you know what – if it weren’t for attack ads then there would be no coverage. The media has to have conflict, otherwise political coverage is deemed boring and useless. Better to talk about who advanced on Dancing with the Stars. It’s not like it matters who represents us in the legislature, there’s circuses to cover!
I saw some statements by Hall that were troubling to me. First, why does she think it is wrong for her to have to use vacation time from one job, school, to work another one in congress? Many people work two jobs, but none that I know can charge time for two jobs at once. I’m also curious why she won’t set up a debate if her only concern is the venue and moderator. The most puzzling statement though was about affordable education for our children. My son is only two-years-old so he’s not in school yet, but aren’t they still free?
