Oh great! Let”s cut up the area into even more slices.
Tommy Battle and Madison Mayor Paul Finley have “burried the hatchet” Let’s take a look at the bigger picture work towards the good of all. Huntsville-Madison could become one of the world’s top metropolises. (NASA. Some of the greatest minds in the world at Research Park. The sheer beauty of the landscape)
Together we prosper! Divided costs more!

Kirk (a South Huntsville resident that just want’s to go back to being a Huntsville resident)
Kirk, I think you are misunderstanding what a civic association is. In addition to bringing people together for meetings and events (getting to know neighbors is a good thing) it’s most useful role is as an information conduit. For example, the civic association can work to prioritize roads that need to be resurfaced and present this information to our city council member(s) rather than the member have to try to set priorities by themselves just based on calls. They can also assist information flowing the other direction. Another benefit is that the association may be able to address more mundane issues without involving city government.
This isn’t a group forming to detach from Huntsville. Rather, the civic association (there are others in Huntsville) will be a mechanism to promote better government. We might be “one city” but the reality remains that different neighborhoods and sectors of the city face different challenges and civic associations are a good way of trying to surmount them.
Brian:
I think SHCA does not understand what a “civic association” is or the title would not have “South Huntsville” in it. C’mon! This is mostly STILL about Stone Manor. And what difference does it make is S.Prky gets finished before N. Prky? Any major problem I have had (well there was just the one involving tree limb disposal) Sandra Moon took care of it. When she can’t fix every problem, it just might be because she is looking towards the greater good of all of HSV.
“Metropolis” Keep saying that word over and over and think of how terrific it could be.
How does having “South Huntsville” in the title preclude understanding of what constitutes a civic association? I’m assuming the currently existing West Huntsville Civic Association and the Northeast Huntsville Civic Association are also ignorant as to the true meaning of a “civic association”.
So just because West & NE Huntsville does something counter-productive, we should too?
You didn’t answer the question – how does having “South Huntsville” in the title preclude understanding of what constitutes a civic association? I wasn’t commenting on the effectiveness or productivity of what was being done – rather asking a simple question.
civ⋅ic
–adjective
1. of or pertaining to a CITY; municipal: civic problems.
2. of or pertaining to citizenship; civil: civic duties.
3. of citizens: civic pride.

Let’s do just that and be a “CITY” of one and leave north, south, east and west to be setteled by our kids in sporting events.
After attending the meeting, maybe I am looking at “civic associations” as a whole in the wrong way. (I was knocked back in my chair when that one lady said there are 37 of them in Huntsville)
But still, the SHCA seems to be soley based of 14 people moving into Stone Manor. (half of them handicaped) Sure there will be more but they only get one (1) strike and they’re out! (drugs, crime, etc…)
I can’t remember exactly what Sandra Moon said there near the end about the poor (it kinda teared me up a little) but we have to reach out to those that are down on their luck. And we ALL have to put something into the kitty when doing so!
If I understood it all, we have a grand total of one (1) housing project in South Huntsville. (Stone Manor) And no plans to have any more here. I for one would go along with one more since the rest of the city has more than that.
One vision! One city. (but of course, let’s get Madison in on the deal and be the best metropolis in the country) Shall we call it Von Braunia Alabama? :D
Kirk, glad you attended. My impression of civic associations is colored by the one I belong to, which is an effective organization for interfacing with city officials. I’m sure the city engineer wouldn’t mind hearing from individual homeowners, but I bet he is much more efficient when the heads of the civic associations can submit a list of requests from an area.
I think the SHCA will be a long term positive outgrowth of the HHA poverty “deconcentration” move.
In addition to Stone Manor there will be Mahogany Row that was already purchased.
Civic Associations across the country are neighborhood groups geared at a specific area of a municipality. Defining civic doesn’t mean anything, to quote the definition of a single word in a phrase does not tell you what the entire phrase means (like the definition of oyster tells you nothing of a rocky mountain oyster).
While SHCA was partially created out of the actions of HHA – as a whole it seems to be using the issue to get people in a dialogue looking for solutions that will work.
Well that “taxation without representation” part didn’t sit well with me. How the heck did that get a standing ovation? We are well represented in this town. And NO housing projects in any specific area of Huntsville is just unacceptable. Even if everyone had more information in advance, it still had to be done. I dont want any “crappy part of town.” Does anybody? If you cram all the housing projects together, that’s what you get. Huntsville is a very unique city. Let’s keep it that way.
If the SHCA can provide any tangable help to anyone then I wish them the very best. But any problem I can think of can be solved by looking through the blue pages of the phone book.
