Proration? Tax receipts down drastically? Economy in free fall?

Nevermind!

From AL.com:

The Huntsville school board on Thursday approved pay raises for summer school teachers and principals.

All summer teachers with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees will make $20 per hour this summer. That’s an increase from $15.02, $16.28, and $17.54 per hour, respectively. Summer principals will make $200 per day, an increase from $167.27 a day.

For teachers with a bachelor’s degree that comes to a 33% pay raise.  The principals are getting a 20% raise.

In fairness, this could be one of those “long overdue” pay increases.  Also, I don’t claim to know what competitive teaching wages for summer school are in the area.  I do know, however, that when I hear government officials whine about not having enough revenue all the time that it is hard to justify such a pay increase.

And how is this going to be paid for?  With stinkulus money?  And when the stinkulus money runs out, how will be continue paying these salaries because we know darn well they aren’t going to lower back to previous levels!?  I agree our teachers deserve more pay for number of students they have, but not at the cost of super higher taxes.  Maybe they’re hoping the gambling revenue will be rolling in by the time they need it.  Insanity run amuck!
