Huntsville Tax Day Tea Party a Huge Success

Wow, great turn out for today’s Tax Day Tea Party in Huntsville, AL.  Police estimated the crowd to be 2,300!

Everyone was fired up, but well behaved.  Suffice it to say that all have had enough of our federal government’s out of control spending.  Speakers included State Senate District 7 candidates Paul Sanford and Sam Givhan, Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks, and FairTax spokesman Chuck Bailey.  Dale Jackson of WVNN MC’ed the event.  Many, many thanks to Christie Carden who organized this event.

Here’s some pictures I took (note all the great signs):

And here are a few from regular reader John:

The Huntsville Police can’t count.  Fox News estimated 1500, they can’t count either.     I think it’s hilarious that Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks,  an elected public official, is protesting the government when they are the government.   Go figure.

Crowd estimates are just that – estimates.  Are you familiar with that term?  No one claims they counted each and every person.  My own estimate is 2,000, but I admit I have no idea how to estimate crowd size.  I wish you had the cognitive capacity to understand what Brooks and the rest of us were protesting.

I hear you about the crowd estimates.  The media consistantly under estimated the pre Iraq crowd size.  In the end they just quit trying and would say Thousands, or hundreds.   Please help my cognitive capicity to understand and explain what you and Mo Brooks were protesting, because I honestly don’t get it.

I went today and was pleasantly surprised.  It was my first protest, which I would imagine is the same situation for a lot of others.  I’m not sure what I was expecting.

The problem with having candidates speak is that they stump, which makes it about themselves and not about the idea of freedom and individuality.

Redeye, maybe I can help out with the reason for the protests.  It was the physical manifestation of the abhorrence with which we regard the voluminous and exorbitant amounts of monies which are being appropriated.  This sentiment started when Bush decided to be compassionate with other peoples money even though it might not have been realized in protest form.

This is a protest of an idea, not individuals.  That is why some government officials can actually attend a protest against what the government is doing even while they are a member of the same.  I’d prefer that they hadn’t today since it was about us citizens that don’t usually have a voice but it was okay, even with the slight stump speech phrasing from the candidates.

Neil, too bad we didn’t get a chance to meet there.  Good luck reasoning with Redeye.

Not sure who the best speaker would be.  I thought Mo did a great job firing up the crowd.  Candidates are eager to get in front of any crowd, which makes them eager speakers.  I suspect many other folks would rather avoid speaking in front of a protest.

Thank you Neil.  I may not agree with the reason for the protest but I respect your right to protest.  Dissent is the highest form of Patriotism.
One more question,  why do you think the abhorrence with which we regard the voluminous and exorbitant amounts of monies which are being appropriated wasn’t expressed in protest form under Bush?

    Darn it, I just can’t help myself…

First of all, Obama has considerably increased the gain on government spending waste over Bush.  What’s the current projected deficit, like $2 trillion?!  I think we both know the answer to your question, though.  Conservatives were unwilling to unite in opposition to a sitting supposedly conservative Republican president.  I, personally, was quick to point out Bush’s big spending, big government ways, but the party itself was not willing to oppose one of their own.  I’m not saying its right and I don’t like it.  That’s why Americans kicked their butts out of office in droves – and they deserved it.

Regardless of how elected Republicans acted while in power, the people on the ground want fiscal responsibility and a government that is not overbearing.  It is just easier for them to rally for those desires while the opposition is in power and running the country into the ground.

Really, looking back at what the GOP did wrong (and I’m not arguing they are paragons of virtue on the subject) only diverts attention away from how the Democrats are currently far more aggressive in pursuing damaging, unsustainable spending.

For the crowd estimate – the Fox reporter took his count before people had finished arriving.  I would say the crowd was at least 2,000 – I think  HPD did a reasonable job estimating.   I’ve heard higher estimates as well, but I think HPD’s is a conservative estimate of the crowd.

Where were these protesters when bush and his republican and democratic cohorts ran the US government into the ground. we can’t take care of the American citizens but we can hand out  money to ISRAEL …Egypt and other terrorist states in the middle east.

It’s is amazing to me that a tribe consisting of 1.4% of the USA’s population has total control of the US government. Anyone who criticizes the State of ISRAEL and their terrorist activities on their neighbors is attack to no end.

  10. Jennifer on April 16, 2009 at 8:16 am permalink

This is for Don…..Israel a terrorist state???? They are the ones that get bombed and threatened!  They have to stand up for themselves or they would be wiped off the face of the earth.  The minute we turn our backs on Israel, God removes his blessing from us.  Have you read a Bible lately?

Also, here’s why these people didn’t protest Bush.  Obama has signed the largest porkulus..oh excuse me, stimulus bill ever! He is creating so much more debt than George Bush ever thought about. China is buying up at lot of our debt, do you speak Chinese? What debt they don’t buy, our govenrment is printing money for, which is de-valuing our dollar. We could end up having to use a wheelbarrow full of money just to buy a loaf of bread.  It is not just about Obama either. If it weren’t for his cronies Nancy Pilosi, Barney Frank, etc. he wouldn’t be able to do these things.  AMERICANS (not just republicans or conservatives) ARE OUTRAGED AT OUR GOVERNMENT SPENDING LIKE DRUNKEN SAILORS!! They have to stop spending money. You cannot spend or print your way out of debt.

Don – count me among those who will “attack” you “to no end” for your assertions that 1) Jews control the U.S. Government and 2) Israel is a terrorist State.

IMO it’s understandable that the Left and the anti-Semites are partners in spreading this libel – remember that it was Socialists who were responsible for the Holocaust.

Wow 2000 (or more) people there. That was the first protest I have attended, and I must say it was great. Mo Brooks was outstanding, and I will say I am impressed with both Givhan and Sanford. Dale Jackson behaved himself, and even Brian got a couple seconds on stage.
    Overall a tremendous success.
The thing to remember though, is that it didn’t stop yesterday. There will be more protests this year and next. This enthusiasm has to keep growing all the way to 2010, when we throw out the porkers, elect people who will truly represent us, and not continue this wasteful spending. And yes that includes both Rep. Griffith and Senator Shelby, both of whom are up for reelection in 2010.

I sure wish I could have been there, but I was glad to send some signs.  The Montgomery rally was excellent, too.

What bothers me greatly is that President Obama consistantly mentions:  that he Inherited
this situation;  that these problems have grown over the years; and, most unnecessarily,
apologizes for America, Americans..which includes me and I do not need anyone else
to apologize for me..for things like being “Arrogant”, etc..  My question is:  How did he vote,
When he voted other than PRESENT,  on these policies ‘that he Inherited’  ?  What does his
voting record actually say about how he stood up for We Americans ?

I am glad I went yesterday.  I have never been to a political protest or demonstration, but I am glad I went.  I am a thirty-something year old female.  I do not listen regularly to conservative talk radio, but when I was driving back from Atlanta on a business trip, I was flipping through the radio stations and I learned of the Tea Party.

I don’t care what Obama and his administration say about lowering the tax burden on me right now.  If you can do simple math, it is obvious we are spiraling out of control economically and more government is not the answer.  I know my taxes will be raised in the future to cover this crazy debt we are creating for ourselves.  I know inflation is on the horizon which should trouble anyone on a fixed income.

If the heads of companies make poor investment decisions… the government should not bail them out just because of their financial size or influence. If a private corporation can no longer compete (and usually this kind of thing does not happen overnight), the govenment should not bail them out either.

America is a land of sucess and failure.  Failure drives one to do better next time.  It isn’t death.  People can, and will overcome.

Republicans and Democrats – stand together and be fiscally responsible!  This is insanity!

  16. Brian on April 16, 2009 at 11:22 am permalink

Well put Ms. Ivey!  As Milton Friedman said, “To spend is to tax.”  Our government HAS to stop the out of control spending (I don’t care which party is responsible) because it will have to be paid for someday.

And yes, private companies should be allowed to prosper or perish based on their own merits.  We do not need to use tax dollars taken from the “winners” to prop up the “losers.”

Sean Hannity reported 3,000 were at the Huntsville rally. Whether it was 2K, 2300, 3K, whatever, it was a great lunchtime crowd with basically word of mouth to tell people about it.

Jennifer do you watch Fox news more that one hour a week?

What do we get in return for the tax dollars we send to Israel?

According to the Christian Science Monitor….$1.3 Trillion since 1948.

The bible is a book of fairy tales not the word of god …the bible has been rewritten numerous times and according to scholars many of the recorded event were recorded 300 and 400 years after the fact.

Why did the Romans rewrite the bible creating the new testament…..Didn’t like the other so the made up their own.

The above statement is what you would expect from the member of a cult……….ingrained from birth

Invisible man in the clouds running the show….I bet if you were of age you voted 2 times for George bush… he claims god told him to run for President…hilarious..

At 3am. papers concerning the cap and trade bill were added to the bill.
Hidden away was a law if passed to not let anyone sell their home until it is inspected by an agency of the govt. You the taxpayer must pay for the inspection
and if your house does not meet the standards of the govt. you can not sell
until it is brought up to standards. These will include energy efficient appliances
and thermal pane windows along with proper insulation.Bathtubs,commodes.type of heat and you name it. This is a dangerous bill and must be stopped.
It would of failed except 8 people who were not Democrats were bought off by
the President. One from Florida sold his vote for a new plant in Orlando, Fl.
I thought vote buying was illegal.
