Double taxation (aka food sales tax elimination) bill fails

Rep. John Knight’s bill to eliminate the state sales tax on food – as well as eliminating the deduction for federal income taxes paid – failed to reach the required number of votes to be brought up for debate yesterday in the Alabama House.  Other than Democrat Richard Laird the vote was spilt along party lines.  I guess everyone kept a watchful eye on Randy Hinshaw.

Knight’s bill failed to garner the vote required on the BIR vote, but it had enough (a simple majority) votes to have been passed if it had been a vote on the bill itself…. if everyone would have voted the same way…..which legislators often don’t do for various, and sometimes nefarious, reasons.
