From the Sanford campaign:

Paul Sanford, Republican candidate for the Alabama Senate in the April 21st runoff, today commended Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle’s plan to cut spending in city government and urged the Alabama Legislature to follow suit.

Mayor Battle will not fill certain vacancies created by retirement and will assign those duties to others already employed in the city departments affected. He will do this in lieu of layoffs and said there will be no reduction in services.

“Tough choices have to be made during tough times,” Sanford said. “The Alabama Legislature should take a page from this book and do everything possible to cut waste and inefficiency where it exists so that state workers won’t be laid off. When a state employee retires, those duties should be divided among existing state employees,” Sanford added.

Mayor Battle has also ordered an energy audit to find ways to cut down on energy costs for the city. “As a restaurant owner, I know that rising utility costs can be significant to the bottom line of my business. State government should be examples to all of us on being energy-efficient,” Sanford said.

Governor Riley has imposed a hiring freeze on state agencies, and Sanford said that is a step in the right direction.
