More about PACs – STA PAC, which contributed $10,000 to Sam Givhan and $2,000 to Laura Hall,  appears to be significantly funded by Drummon or Drummons (depending on the report – really Drummond Coal).  For some odd reason their Expenditure reports are incomplete, but they appear to contribute mostly to the Alabama Democratic Party and Democrat candidates.

STA PAC, TOC PAC, and Children’s PAC are run by Rudy Davidson.

Laura Hall got money from TRAIL, which is probably TRIAL, the Alabama Trial Lawyer’s PAC.  Funny how these groups and contributors make a lot of typos; it’s almost like they don’t really want people to know about them.

The Birmingham News has a great list of PACs.

More:

As I understand it, Rudy Davidson’s PACs are funnels for trial lawyers, gambling, and AEA.  Deserve Victory PAC and TAG PAC are run by Claire Austin and funnel money from trial lawyers and gambling.

FARM PAC is ALFA.

More:

Claire Austin is one of the good guys, so to speak.  She worked for Senator Sessions and was Attorney General Bill Pryor’s Campaign Manager. She also worked for Mitt Romney’s Presidential Campaign.  She does represent gambling interests (lottery).

And still more:

Southern Insights (”a full service Republican Political Consulting and Public Affairs firm”) is Givhan’s political consultant.  One would hope that they steered him away from bad ol’ AEA money, but the STA PAC, TOC PAC, and Children’s PAC contributions of $25,000 are somewhat troubling. Maybe Chris Brown or Paul Glass can explain it to us.

UPDATE:

Dale Jackson at WVNN invited Brian to comment on the election this morning – Thanks Dale.

Will Anderson at WBHP mentioned this post this morning – Thanks Will.

    Good summary.  Couple of points…

The Marc Huff who gave to Givhan is not the recent congressional candidate (first name spelled different, wrong address).

The Birmingham PACs (STA PAC, TOC PAC, and Children’s PAC) are typically considered Democrat PACs.  I’m looking into those now.

The Deserve Victory and TAG PACs are particularly troubling.  Neither is listed in the official AL SOS list of PACs.  Neither has filed a report since 2004.  How is he getting money from inactive, unregistered PACs?

I asked someone in the know about Rudy Davidson, who runs the three PACs that gave a combined $25k to Givhan.  This person called Davidson a “Democrat PAC swapper.”  One might think that Givhan would be extra cautious about where he gets his money from after that email detailing contributions to Democrats made the rounds.

Not that this is a real shocker, but one of the PACs Givhan took money from (STA PAC, $10000) violated its stated purpose by giving him money.  Its purpose is “To support local and state incumbents who have and will take a stand and who have served the will of the people.”  One problem: Givhan isn’t an incumbent.

Granted, the stated purposes of the PACs are ridiculous, which Dan (formerly of Daily Dixie) showed us last year.  He created DAN PAC whose purpose is “To filter funds from controversial or unpopular groups to other PACs and candidates for the purpose of hiding the actual source of a candidate’s campaign money from voters.”

One of my favorite Givhan contributors is Al Jimmerson – seems so funny he would take money from one of the partners in the firm that forced him to make individual contributions to democrats (page 8).

And yes – I gave money to Paul Sanford

Just got word that the Deserve Victory and TAG PACs are run by a lobbyist who lobbies for the trial lawyers and Milton McGregor.  Why is Givhan taking money from these groups?

Brian – fixed the mistake in the post.

It’s nice to see that, despite the large gap between the candidate with the most amount of money and the candidates with the least, the race is very tight and competitive.  Let’s hope money alone can’t buy this election.

Guys, it looks like you have another Enfinger.

  8. Jonathan on February 26, 2009 at 11:32 pm permalink

Yep, and we know how well Enfinger worked out for the republicans.

  9. David Hatch on February 26, 2009 at 11:35 pm permalink

Please no!  Now that Enfinger’s puppet mayor is out of office, I was hoping this city could get back to doing the work of the people and not catering to Enfinger’s every need.

Oh, and in full disclosure for my previous statement above, I support and am voting for Allan Rhodes.

Sam is a total fraud.  We knew this from the beginning.  Where is the state GOP – who hollered long and loud about that school board race – on this??????

Maybe the state GOP is in bed with some of these same Demo-oriented Big Mules?
