Finding the worst in any situation
Posted by BrianThe media has a tendency to make you think you’re walking around with a rain cloud overhead, tracing your every step. No matter what they always find - and enthusiastically point out - the negative aspect of any story. People living longer or number of murders declining? Watch out for a story on how the casket industry is suffering.
We’ve been told for quite a while that we need to drive less, that we’re using too much gas. Well, Americans are driving less now. 10 billion less miles in this past May versus a year ago. The media’s response? Environment saved? Dirty oil companies getting screwed? No. They dourly intone that revenue from gas taxes is decreasing. Typical.

As a marketer (although not in mass media), I might lose my decoder ring for stating this opinion, but I think advertising is based on anxiety - your stuff isn’t new, good, or big enough, so you need more.
So what does media run on? Advertising? What’s good for advertising? Anxiety. And I’ve noticed the more people pay attention to media (esp. TV and radio news), the more anxious they are. And, by the way, materialistic.
I’ll put my tin-foil hat back on…
