Congress AL-5 Issues

2008 April 28
by Reactionary

Brian and I were talking about putting together some questions for the Democratic and Republican candidates for Alabama District 5, US House of Representatives.

IMO people are always concerned about four issues: jobs, crime, education, and roads. However, my key issue this election is Victory in Iraq – regardless of any other issue I will only vote for a candidate who supports winning the war.

Rasmussen has a nice Top Ten Congressional Issues list (the link also shows latest Party advantage):

  1. Economy
  2. Gov’t Ethics & Corruption
  3. Social Security
  4. Nat’l Security/War on Terror
  5. Education
  6. Health Care
  7. Iraq
  8. Taxes
  9. Immigration
  10. Abortion

Update – Candidate websites (if available):

George Barry (R) – Businessman.

Cheryl Baswell Guthrie (R) – Attorney.

Parker Griffith (D) – State Senator.

Mark Huff (R) – Musician.

David Maker (D) – Physicist.

Angelo Mancuso (R) – Dermatologist.

Ray McKee (R) – Attorney.

Wayne Parker (R) – Insurance Executive.

Must see – Doc’s AL-05 Big List.

If you’d like to include questions for consideration, post them in the comments.

My grandpa was a dentist. That means you should let me give you a root canal.

You should hear her speak. It’s nauseating hearing her rattle off her relative’s resumes as a surrogate for her own.

The war is now a nation building exercise that will continue indefinitely. How do you win an occupation when the citizens don’t want you there?

matt – I agree with your point about nation-building of indefinite duration, and I’ll add that we’re also killing bad guys and helping to secure vital US interests. Plus we brought an evil tyrant to justice and freed 20 million people.

I don’t agree that the citizens of Iraq don’t want us there. We are winning the occupation – arguing otherwise is so last year…

To win: consider Britain vs communists in Malaysia (1948 – 1960), IIRC the successful lessons learned informed some of US counterinsurgency doctrine (Petraeus). The key element is time – taking a long term view – staying power – IMO electing McCain and pro-victory Congress will give the Iraqi Government the time they need to gain the confidence and commitment of the Iraqi people.

    1) When will you make copies of your 1040 available?
    2) What is the proper role of the government in our daily lives?
    3) What do you plan to do spend with the “tax rebate” checks going out this month?
    4) Why is it proper for a foreign corporation to build planes for the AF? (trick question looking for tricky answers)
    5) Who benefits from things as they are now?
    6) What weapons should a citizen not own?
    7) Should birth right citizenship be abolished?
    8) What is your answer to those who say they can’t get a straight answer from a candidate.
    9) Is there a health care crisis? If so, what is your plan?

Most of the issues listed have pat, party approved answers which the candidates won’t deviate from.

Thanks Jonathan. Fixed. BTW, I searched for each candidate: “name”, Alabama, Congress. I didn’t find a website for Mr. Barry, sorry. I didn’t find one for Mr. Maker either.

George’s site wasn’t up for a while – I was glad you provided the links, I hadn’t found one for Mancuso prior to your page.
