A reason to vote for Barack Obama

Why is 21-year-old Tiondra Boldon, a college student at the University of North Texas, voting for Barack Obama?  She offered this insightful view into the inner workings of her mind in a nationally broadcast interview on NPR:

“The way he speaks to us, it’s not using all these, I guess, dictionary type words.”

I believe the children are our future.

And you could find people who can’t stand John McCain, but who will vote for him anyway, simply because he happens to claim to be a “Republican”. What’s the difference?

This is the kind of person who probably wouldn’t have voted at all otherwise. I think it’s great that she found a reason to be involved in the process. Being inarticulate doesn’t disqualify you from voting.

Kristopher – I am a very firm believer in participating in your government (I’m a history teacher), however it deeply concerns me that someone will vote for a candidate simply because he doesn’t use “dictionary words.” I’m not sure what is worse, voting because of that reason and getting something you didn’t bargain for or simply not voting at all because you don’t (or won’t) spend the time to get to know the issues.

Not everyone has “issues” they want the President to address. Some people just want to have a President that gives them pride…maybe that’s all Tiondra wants.

I’m the biggest policy wonk you’ll ever find, but I don’t expect that same interest out of everyone. However, everyone gets the right to vote and I won’t denigrate anyone who chooses to exercise it…because too many simply don’t.

I KNEW William F. Buckley (may he rest in peace) should have run for Prez!

    Lighten up, Kristopher.

I’m not denigrating “anyone who chooses to exercise” the right to vote. I’m poking fun at a 21-year-old college student who doesn’t know how to talk. Outside of the context of who she is voting for her statement is funny (or sad). Maybe my standards are unreasonably high, but I expect a college junior to be able to talk without saying things like “dictionary type words.” I certainly don’t expect a learned person to be enamored by someone because they don’t use “dictionary type words.”

Within the context of justifying her support for BO her statement is even more absurd. Obama’s powerful (dare I say audacious!) oratory skills and accompanying command of the English language, including “dictionary type words,” is a trait he is well know for possessing. Her suggestion, poorly worded as it may be, that he is some type of commoner in his discourse is unfounded in my opinion.
