Fred Thompson wins Madison Co. GOP straw poll
Posted by BrianFred Thompson was the big winner in this morning’s straw poll at the Madison County Republican Men’s Club breakfast. I’m going off memory, but I believe approximately 200 ballots were cast and Thompson received about 35% of those. Romney was a distant second, while McCain and Huckabee were virtually tied for third. Giuliani and Paul received about the same number of votes. Alarmingly, even Alan Keyes got a vote.
- Fred Thompson
- Mitt Romney
- John McCain
- Mike Huckabee
- Rudy Giuliani
- Ron Paul

I would invite all the Fred supporters to join with Huckabee now that he has dropped out of the race. Check on Meetup.com for a local grass roots team to work with.

Do you think for one second that someone who would vote for a conservative would now turn around to vote for a RINO!?
Keep dreaming!!

Personally, I prefer Ron Paul, whose conservative credentials easily dwarf those of both Thompson and Huckabee.
I have studied Huckabee’s record, though, and while there are areas of concern (mainly on tax issues) I believe that he is a conservative despite what the talking heads say. One reason he caught fire and Thompson didn’t is that he is at least advancing a big idea: the FairTax. If Thompson had at least tried to proffer ideas like the FairTax he would still be in the contest. He is a fine conservative, but he ran an anemic campaign.

Obviously, you’ve just begun your studying of his record Brian.

When you return from digesting that list we’ll see how much of a “conservative” you think that RINO clown is.

Talking down your nose to others is no way to win converts to your point of view. Huckabee is every bit as conservative as Bush is, which isn’t saying that much to be honest. I’ve followed him since he was governor of Arkansas. I was never terribly impressed with him, but he does have a fundamental understanding of what it means to be a conservative. My biggest bone of contention with him is over tax issues, but his ardent support of the FairTax offsets those misgivings.
Here in Alabama we have a governor, Bob Riley, who is similar to Huckabee. He is socially conservative, but has demonstrated a penchant to expand parts of the government and once fought tooth and nail FOR the largest tax increase in the history of Alabama (just to name a couple). I’ve had significant problems with him (and Huckabee), but I’d take either over whoever the Democrats nominate this year.
If Huckabee is to be considered a charlatan who is unfit to be the GOP standard bearer then the same logic should apply to Romney. Romney said whatever he had to to get elected as governor of one of the most liberal states in the nation. He fought to pass health insurance mandates. Now he is saying what conservatives want to hear - and I like a lot of what he says. I just don’t believe him.
The simple fact is that there are few politicians who are able to follow party or conservative orthodoxy without error. Thompson, for example, was instrumental to passing McCain-Feingold. GOP adherents who demand ideological purity that even Reagan couldn’t live up to are simply predetermining the fate of the party.
Like I said, Paul is easily the most conservative candidate. His fiscal discipline, dedication to limited federal government, and adherence to our Constitution is second to none. I think in a few years, once his message sinks in and spreads, he will be viewed with the same admiration as Barry Goldwater. Some of his supporters are nuts, no doubt, but that doesn’t diminish his message. I’m hot and cold on his foreign policy. I think we would benefit from less intervention into the affairs of others for a litany of reasons, but I also think we need to be able to project strength as a deterrent. There are times when it may be in our best interests to do so outside our borders. That said, on the whole he is more traditionally – and consistently - conservative than all the other GOP candidates.

Winghunter, I read through your link. Reminds me of something I learned during my career as a prison guard, if you were not getting filed on by the inmates, you were not doing your job. There are several factions within the conversative movement, all of them very vocal. You can not please them all, and have to be principled. I am still comfortable in believing Huckabee will do the best for the country as a whole.

“… during my career as a prison guard …”
What happened, did Huckabee pardon all your “customers” and put you out of a job!
(Sorry, couldn’t help myself on that one. I for one think his pardon record is blown out of proportion and when you look at the recidivism rate of those he pardoned versus that of the general population that is paroled or released after satisfying the terms of their sentence he looks like a miracle worker.)

That’s funny, I spent a career finding those criminals who people like you have to babysit and the Huckster’s partial excuses which are immaterial to the charges in the face of direct evidence and subsequent convictions remind me of every single one of them who demand their innocence as they’re escorted off.
Your comfort level must stem from the fact that you’re used to being around them and even seeing them occupy the White House but, that certainly doesn’t mean you should vote them in when you’ve already been fully advised beforehand.
Didn’t one of your jailhouse lawyers ever discuss the impossibility of amendments being passed or repealed to our Constitution? Where our very own Huckster’s platform offers no less than four of them plus somehow injecting the bible into it at the explicit instructions from our founding fathers not to do.
Body slam yourself awake here, it’s no time to be caught by a con artist from your own greed as that is the only way you can be taken by one.

So… I’m thinking maybe I will not put you down on the Huckabee call back list to remind you to vote.
And Brian, it is the California RINO governor that is facing a mass release of inmates due to the financial crisis created by the prison union’s demand for excessive public retirement payouts, (and not one on these inmates every worked at the mansion). Of course, Alabama wins on that one as I transfer Calif. state funds into the local economy each month.
(Tongue firmly in cheek I assure you.)
