Since my primary interest is state politics, I try to keep my nose out of city politics; but I have to point out 2 glaring differences between this payraise and what the legislature did last year: First of all, they’re not trying to shroud it in secrecy. There’ll be no gavelling it through on a voice vote. And secondly, it will not take effect until after the next election.

At least they’re providing an opportunity for discussion before the vote.

Agreed, Mike. I said as much in my previous post on the matter and I called in to Dale’s show to make those points.

As someone who opposed the tactics used by your colleagues enough to drive to Montgomery with my wife and three young children to protest on the State House steps I just can’t bring myself to oppose this pay hike. They went about it the right way and I feel the proposed salaries are reasonable even if the percentage increase is obscene.

There are three conditions that must be satisfied:

    1) It is done in the open with public comment.

    2) It must not take effect until after the next election cycle.

    3) The pay must be reasonable.

I think Huntsville’s leaders satisfied all three.
