Just sticking to Huckabee's remarks and election impact.

I think the major harm will be that a Huckabee/Whoever Presidential contest will turn into a referendum on gay issues. Which neither side should really want. It might be hazardous down ticket for the Democrats and why give the Republicans down ticket advantage?

Major positive is that this does appeal to the base which is what winning primaries/etc is all about. Whether he has room to move the middle is unclear to me.

I will caveat my statement about federal funding of science and medical issues by saying that there is a necessary role for such spending to support military endeavors. For example, I don't think the private sector on its own has much motivation for researching into how to treat certain injuries that are mostly limited to the battlefield (or on how to effectively inflict such injuries).

I was actually starting to kinda respect Huckabee until I read this.

And as libertarian as I am, I find it hard to be against all federal medical and science research. I guess it's because of what I do, but a reasonable amount of NSF seems okay. Although I don't know... industry grants would probably be better. I'm conflicted.
