Shelby Pork Report XVII
Posted by BrianThe Decatur Daily has a long list of north Alabama pork projects announced by the august Sen. Richard Shelby.
- The Arc of Madison County Facilities Expansion, $250,000.
- City of Hamilton Fulton Bridge Industrial Park, $1 million.
- Alabama Association of Area Agencies on Aging, $1 million.
- Cummings Research Park Intermodal Center, $1.29 million.
- University of Alabama in Huntsville Intermodal Facility, $1.55 million.
- UAH Transportation, Infrastructure and Logistics Research, $500,000.
- U.S. Space and Rocket Center Tramway Extension, $259,000.
- City of Gadsden Community Buses, $129,000.
I may be crazy, but I don’t see how community buses in Gadsden, AL, for example, should be a federal concern.

For what it’s worth, the state puts zero dollars into public transportation. Alabama is one of four states that puts zero dollars into public transportation. (Actually, one source has said Alabama is one of two states that does not fund public transportation, the other being Hawaii.)

I’m aware of the ban. If memory serves I believe it is a constituional thing. Still doesn’t mean that buses in Gadsden (or anywhere else in Alabama) should be a federal concern. What’s stopping the Gadsdenites from funding their own transportation if they think it is so important?

Transportation is a federal concern. Washington spends billions annually on subsidizing or enabling every form of transportation in widespread use.
I guess you could make the argument that is not the right call, but if they are going to spend it for every other form of transportation, then I have no problem with spending it for one of the most efficient and cost effective uses of transportation dollars.
And Shelby does bring transportation dollars to Alabama…

BTW, your blog will not allow me to post a comment using Firefox. When I try, it keeps saying that “Name” and “Email” are required fields though I have filled them in.
I have to use IE to post a comment.

1) I hope you’re just jerking my chain with the Shelby brings transportation dollars comment. Shelby is fleecing the federal treasury for useless pork projects that serve absolutely no purpose other than to give him some good press.
2) Thanks for the info about Firefox. Dan told me about a similar problem recently, but I failed to ask which browser he was using. I was able to replicate the error with Firerox on my PC. The new version of Wordpress messed up a number of things on my template, with this being by far the most problematic. I guess this will accelerate my efforts to change/modify my template.

Not meaning to jerk your chain at all about Shelby. Was just making an observation.

Perhaps Shelby, like Hillary, thinks we live in a global community. It does take a village, you know.
