Kudos to Senator Shelby
Posted by BrianEarlier this year convicted congressman Randy ”Duke” Cunningham was interviewed by federal agents in the prison he calls home near Tucson. The details he provided of his corrupt activities are alarming for many reasons and the article is worth reading just to comprehend the sheer audacity of his actions. But what really caught my attention was this:
[Cunningham] spoke of having had to find ways to get around objections from Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, both of whom tried to block Cunningham’s spending projects for Wade and Wilkes as wasteful and unneeded.
Any long time readers know that I have been sharply critical of Shelby for his excessive use of earmarks, many of which are indeed wasteful in my opinion. I was simply floored that out of the other 534 legislators in D.C. one of only two singled out by Cunningham for their efforts to stop “wasteful” and “unneeded” earmarks would be Sen. Shelby. I most humbly offer a hearty congratulation to Alabama’s senior senator for trying to do the right thing. I’m still not going to quit casting a light on your pork barrel spending and offering due criticism, but your stock just went up.
