Alabama’s senators vote against our troops
Posted by BrianFreshman Virginia senator Jim Webb proposed an amendment to the defense authorization bill currently being debated that would have mandated that troops be granted home leave between deployments of at least as long as their previous combat tours. Seems like a bill that anyone who supports our troops would like, right? Well, both Alabama senators were among the 41 who blocked the amendment. It’s kind of hard to argue that you “support the troops” when you vote to return them to harm’s way in a more expeditious manner.

Actually, according to the linked article, Webb’s bill would require “longer troop rest periods between combat deployments”, which is quite different from “leave”. Those rest periods could still be either overseas out of a combat area or stateside from the way the article is worded. Leave, sometimes called furlough, is when a service member can leave their unit and go anywhere on their own. Unless things have changed since my time in service, each member is authorized 30 days of ordinary leave time each year, subject to the needs of the unit.
