Why federal election funding stinks

From The Hill:
A second consecutive disappointing fundraising quarter is leading the campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to consider accepting federal matching funds in the primary, campaign manager Terry Nelson told reporters Monday.
McCain only has $2 million cash on hand. Obviously he is not a popular candidate and that reality is borne out by the paltry campaign receipts. Most in his own party don’t want him to win the nomination.
So this unpopular candidate may now opt to receive federal money to finance his doomed campaign. I’ll admit that the amount of money tossed about in campaigns makes me uneasy and makes me feel like my meager opinions are of little consequence, but it beats the alternative of expanding the federal financing of elections. Under such a system we might see a glut of unpopular, unviable candidates who would be able to run not on the generosity of others, but on money taken by threat of force from private individuals. Even worse, your tax dollars might go to support not just an unpopular candidate, but a candidate with whom you have fundamental disagreements - you could fund the opposition.
