The Armpit of Alabama
Posted by BrianThere are many beautiful parts of Alabama. From hidden gems like Bucks Pocket State Park to tourists meccas like the sandy beaches of Gulf Shores this state offers ample beauty. But there are some decidedly less attractive parts of the state.
I would challenge anyone to find a less appealing area in Alabama than South Boulevard in Montgomery. As a kid I remember going on shopping trips to Montgomery Mall and the stores to the west, but now nearly every major commercial building sits vacant. It’s depressing as hell to drive through. I nearly always think that blighted areas can be rejuvenated via smart development and savvy businesses, but I can’t imagine that area recovering. It seems like little more than a haven for the downtrodden.
I can only think of one other area in the state that would rival South Blvd. and it is also in Montgomery. It begins with a “G” and ends with an “oat Hill.” You actually have to take two showers to wash the slime off after visiting that place.

And yet you didn’t take any pictures, did you?

I don’t stay in one place long enough to take many pictures there!
I don’t think pictures would really do it justice, though. It’s about a four mile stretch of buildings that individually may not seem that bad, but as a whole are beyond the pale.
