Extortion in Huntsville
Posted by BrianSometimes your vote for a particular elected official is vindicated. Today’s case in point is my Huntsville Board of Education member Jennie Robinson. Yesterday the board passed a resolution by a 3-1 vote to urge the county commission to pass a half cent sales tax so that they could build a new International Baccalaureate School in northwest Huntsville. Robinson was the sole dissenting vote.
Board member Jennie Robinson, who cast the no vote, reiterated earlier claims that the proposed school was included merely to capture the vote of County Commissioner Bob Harrison.
“Is it right for a county commissioner to hold out his vote to get something for his district?” Robinson asked after the meeting.
When asked initially about her vote, Robinson replied, “because I think extortion is wrong.”
Board member Topper Birney abstained because he thought the resolution should include a middle school in west Huntsville.
The schools in this area should be ashamed of themselves. The high school in my neighborhood, Grissom, recently moved its four or so portable classrooms from behind the school to the front. The intent is clear, to try to shame voters into pressuring Mo Brooks to change his vote (good luck with that!). In moving the buildings they put them very close to a major four lane road. But why should they consider the safety of the students when there is the potential to milk more money from the populace? The school claims they needed more parking. In the words of Roy D. Mercer, “Bull butter.”
