Alabama minimum wage bill set to stall?

According to Danny, Rep. Patricia Todd’s bill that would raise the minimum wage in Alabama to $7.25 is likely going to stall in committee.  Good.  The government shouldn’t be meddling in the wage that a willing worker and willing employer agree upon.

To realize the absurdity of a minimum wage law think about this.  If you want to volunteer and offer your labor for free you’re allowed to do so.  You can give away 40 hours (or more) of labor a week and the government says that is just fine.  But, let’s say you wanted to get a couple of dollars an hour from the place you have been volunteering to help defray costs you incur.  Nope, the government says.  You must either give it away or the business/charity must pay you a minimum wage.  It is an affront on your FREEDOM to choose where and how you sell your primary commodity: your labor.

Amen. Fact is that the market is the best mechanism for setting wages, and it’s working just fine on its own. Just try to find a fast food joint that starts its employees out making minimum wage. You’ll be hard-pressed to find one.

To be frank, I don’t believe you. The current federal minimum wage is $5.15/hr. This Sonic (bottom of page), which is in the middle of nowhere in Texas, starts its carhops at $6.00/hr. Feel free to send me a copy of your most recent pay stub to prove your claim (brian-at-flashpointblog-dot-com).
