The citizens of Madison are justifiably irate over Loweel Barron’s attempt to steal 263 acres from them at the behest of a developer.  The Huntsville City leadership is claiming innocence, but not helping Madison to squash this land grab.  Well, I’m supporting Madison and I sent the following email to the City Council and the Mayor.

I had the opportunity to speak with Councilwoman Moon about the Madison deannexation issue yesterday, but I haven’t had the opportunity to converse with the rest of you.  I just wanted to let all of you know that I am supporting Madison.  At the very least I would like to see our city council vote NOT to annex the property if it is taken from Madison.  Ideally I would like to see the Council and the Mayor step forward now and proclaim that Huntsville will not under any circumstance play a role in this land grab.

Right now the Huntsville leadership is piously throwing up its hands and suggesting that this is between the state and Madison, but conveniently adding the caveat that they will act in the best interests of Huntsville.  Well, the best interests of Huntsville aren’t always to maximize tax revenue.  Sometimes the best interests of Huntsville include being a good neighbor and acting in a morally decent manner.  If the property is deannexed and Huntsville acquires it then the city is no longer an unwitting observer and has become a willing cog in this unsavory endeavor.

I strongly encourage you to publicly proclaim that Huntsville will not play a role in this process.  Otherwise you’re giving Breland exactly what he wants: pressure on Madison to capitulate and give him better incentives.  Don’t be a pawn in his game.
