Alabama’s King of Pork to run in 2010

If there were ever any doubts that Richard Shelby, Alabama’s senior United States senator, is going to seek a fifth term, he put them to rest last weekend.
There had been some speculation, based on a long, productive career that began in 1979 in the U.S. House and fueled by the Democratic takeover of Congress in November, that the Tuscaloosa Republican, who will be 76 when the election for his seat rolls around in 2010, may be contemplating retiring.
That is emphatically not the case, he told The Associated Press.
“I am running for re-election in 2010 and plan to continue representing the people of Alabama as long as they believe in the work I’m doing for our state,” Shelby said.
He was quoted in the context of a story reporting that — with $11.6 million in a campaign war chest that won’t even be opened for at least two more years and will likely be even bigger by the time the 2010 race begins, — Shelby’s end-of-year Federal Election Commission report for 2006 showed him with more money than any of the other 99 senators in Washington.
In addition to his “war chest” he’ll continue buying the votes of Alabamians with our own tax dollars through his wasteful pork projects.
I was seriously hoping the old man would retire.
