The Tax Foundation has compiled their list of federal income taxes paid by county.

Madison County was ranked 254 out of 3,142 counties in percent of adjusted gross income paid to the federal government in income taxes with Mad Co residents paying an average of 10.83%.  That translates to an average income tax liability of $5,832, ranking us 228 in that category.

Shelby County residents paid the greatest percentage of AGI (12.29%) out of all Alabama counties, which ranks it 118 nationally.  The least taxed county in Alabama is Perry County where the average income tax liability was a mere $13.

Ranking high on the list is a double edged sword.  Since the rankings are tied to AGI, being at the top simply means you probably make more money than those below you.  But with our graduated income tax system it also means you are paying a greater percentage of that money to Washington.

As a slight aside, with income tax season upon us you can expect to see a number of posts related to the FairTax here.  My blood started boiling a couple of weeks ago when the tax prep software ads started coming out.  The very notion of having to pay money for the privilege of determining how much money we then have to pay to the government is infuriating.  There is a better way.  Research it for yourself at the FairTax website, read through my archives, or just wait for my new posts on the subject to invariably roll out.
