Three-term Huntsville City Councilman Glenn Watson is gearing up to run for a Madison County Commission seat, and he wants legal guidance from the state on when he can start raising money.

Watson confirmed Monday that he plans to run for the commission in 2008.

“I love challenges. I’m at an age where I’ve learned an awful lot as a city councilman and have proven I could work with Madison and Huntsville and county commissioners,” Watson said.

Watson, 66, said he would seek the Republican nomination for the District 2 commission seat held by Faye Dyer. Dyer, 51, has held the seat since 1988. Attempts to reach Dyer for comment were unsuccessful Monday, but there’s been no official word that she will not seek re-election.

Watson’s announcement is in keeping with his philosophy of announcing early or not running.

This would prove to be quite a primary showdown if Dyer stays in the race.  She has probably won (and lost) a certain chunk of the vote thanks to her principled stand against the recent attempt to increase the sales tax in Madison County.  Watson is the man who proposed the Illegal Immigrant Relief Act in Huntsville.  When the commission took the curious step of asking the HSV city council for input on the sales tax increase Watson didn’t explicitly support or reject the county wide tax saying that he didn’t think Huntsville needed it.  When he tosses his hat in the ring he’ll be forced to take a position even though the matter will likely be resolved by election time.
