MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Senate split 18-17 just after noon today to elect Sen. Hinton Mitchem, D-Albertville, as president pro tem for the next four years, leaving Democrats in control.

Mitchem defeated Sen. E.B. McLain, a lawmaker from Birmingham who was nominated by Sen. Jim Preuitt, D-Talladega. Preuitt withdrew at the last minute as the candidate of a coalition of Democrats and Republicans.

Somewhere Paul Hubbert is uncorking a champaign bottle.
