Despite my general distase of government handouts to state and local governments, I do think that historical preservation is a sound use of the people’s money.

Here is a great example:

Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church has won a $400,000 federal grant that will be used to restore the national historic landmark that was bombed in 1963.

GOP Senator Jeff Sessions announced the grant and said funing [sic] will come from the Saving America’s Treasures portion of the National Park Service budget.

Ugly incidents - like the bombing of church out of racial animus - need to be preserved and kept uncomfortably in front of us so that we never forget.
