My 2006 Ballot - Local Races in Madison County
Posted by BrianThis is the first of my posts outlining how I will be casting my votes for contested positions in the November 7 election. I’m hesitant to call this a list of endorsements. All too often selecting who to vote for isn’t a matter of determining who is most qualified, rather it is a process of determining who is least unqualified. In some cases I will provide rationale on why I am casting my vote for a certain candidate. I’ll be glad to go into further detail on any of my choices - just leave a comment.
State Senate, District 3 - Arthur Orr (R)
- Orr’s challenger, Bobby Day (D), hasn’t been able to provide any compelling reason to vote for him. Day’s campaign has been built almost exclusively on a price gouging lawsuit against one of Orr’s family members. Orr has significant support from individuals and legitimate PACs as opposed to Day who is being propped up by Lowell Barron, Roger Bedford, and a litany of dubious PACs.
State Board of Education, District 8 - Mary Jane Caylor (D)
- I wish there was a better alternative…
Circuit Court Judge, 23rd Judicial Circuit, Place 5 - Mike Seibert (R)
Madison County District Court Judge, Place 2 - Dennis O’Dell (R)
Madison County Sheriff - Blake Dorning (R)
- Other than the party faithful, I can’t imagine who would vote for Hooper or against Dorning.
Madison County Coroner - Bobby Berryhill (D)
Act No. 2005-200 - N/A
- Text of Act: “Shall the provisions of Act 2005-200, which authorizes the county to abate certain health and safety nuisances, be applicable in the unincorporated areas of Madison County?”
- I’ll abstain and let the affected voters decide this for them themselves.

Why Mike Seibert over Laura Jo? Laura Jo has done a great job, especially with respect to most of the judicial community.

That is a race in which I admittedly know very little about either candidate. I don’t have any reason to vote against either candidate. Seibert ran as a libertarian for Congress in 1992 and as a Republican now for the position on the Circuit Court, which leads me to believe that his philosophies are in line with mine.

OK, but I think Laura Jo has similar values to yours also from what I can tell.
