Huntsville axes Morgan County annexation
Posted by BrianHuntsville won’t be annexing across the river into Morgan County after all.
Dr. John Wisda, a Huntsville physician who had asked the city of Huntsville to annex 400 acres he owns near Lacey’s Spring, said this morning he has withdrawn the request.
Wisda, speaking in front of a packed room at the Morgan County Commission meeting in Decatur, said he didn’t realize his request to be annexed into Huntsville would create such a firestorm of opposition.
The 8:30 a.m. meeting was delayed 15 minutes while more than 70 people lined up to speak against the annexation proposal and urge the Morgan County Commission to sue to block it.
Wisda made a last plea for the commission to support his plan, but the commission took no action.
Wisda said he still plans to subdivide his property into mini-farms, but they won’t sell for as much because they won’t be served by city of Huntsville services and won’t be zoned for city of Huntsville schools.
Morgan County Commissioner Stacy George said he plans to seek state legislation prohibiting cities from annexing across county lines without first getting approval from the county commission that governs the area being annexed.
Stacey Lee George was afraid that people in his county might start dancing.
“Whatever is in South Huntsville will be brought into Morgan County,” said George. “I can see it now, whiskey, bars and nightclubs. I just want to do the will of the people and stop it.”
It’s always funny to see how people react when the shoe is on the other foot.
