Sen. Richard Shelby has secured nearly $500k in funding to research transportation at UAH.  I doubt that there was any competitive bidding.

Here is what makes this funding completely audacious.

The money will be used to further develop computer models and simulations designed to study the transportation system in Alabama and how it affects the state’s growth, said Greg Harris, deputy director of UAH’s Office for Economic Development.

A study about transportation IN ALABAMA and the effect on ALABAMA’s growth!  Why in the world should the federal government be funding what is obviously a state program?

But that’s not all!  The good senator was also able to get $150k for the Andalusia-Opp Municipal airport.

The funds will be used to construct a new hangar and to install a self-service fuel system.

“Expanding the infrastructure at the Andalusia-Opp Airport will allow the airport to further meet the needs of the growing community,” said Sen. Shelby. “The improved airport will also help spur economic growth throughout the community by attracting new businesses and residents.”

If the people in the Andalusia-Opp area really wanted/needed these upgrades then they should have funded them!
