The Hypocrisy of Politics
Posted by BrianIn the lead up to the Republican primary in Alabama Tom Parker waged a very dirty campaign against Drayton Nabers for Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Parker accused Nabers of questioning peoples’ Christianity and called him a “Jimmy Carter style liberal.” You can read the full transcript of one of Parker’s radio ads on A Bama Blog.
After Nabers soundly defeated Parker what did Parker do? He endorsed Nabers.
If you are running for an elected office and choose to attack the character and qualifications of your opponent so vehemently how in the world could you support them after the race? Parker said some nasty things about Nabers. Either he doesn’t really believe what his ads claimed, which means he is dishonest, or he does believe what the ads said, but now chooses to lay his his ideals aside.
I would like to see noting but positive, platform oriented ads, but that is a real day dream. Instead I would like to see these losing negative campaigners simply say, “I didn’t think so and so was a good candidate then and I still think so and so is a bad candidate.”
