Stossel Exposes the Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was written to combat employer stupidity. You see, it is in every company's best interest to hire the most qualified person regardless of disability, skin tone, religion, gender, cultural background, etc. In the long run, if an employer consistently turns down better qualified applicants in favor of applicants from a preferred class then, as those superior rejected employees go work for the competition, the discriminatory company will not be as competitive as the others. Eventually their profitability will take a hit and they will have to reevaluate their hiring practices. It is just good business to not discriminate.
Congress just can't stand to let the market punish companies, no sir, they feel an obligation to wade in and do so themselves. Their "solution" is overly complicated legislation that punishes not only the target companies, but also the ones who were doing the right thing beforehand as well as the protected group of applicants. Read John Stossel's latest column and you'll see how.
